Working conditions in the care sector 2018: Key facts

Around 2,766 staffs from the care sector participated in the survey







38% of the participants

work in Berlin.

Followed by NRW with 23%.










Almost one half of the participants

are certified nurses.

They are followed by

certified caregivers with 23%.











Almost one half of the

participants works in big cities.










The average working experience

of the participants is around 15 years.

Almost 1/3 of the participants

have been working for over 20 years.











The majority of the

participants work for

private or public carriers. 









Almost 1/3 of all participants

works for small facilities

with less than 100 beds.







1/3 of the participants

work in hospitals.

Followed by inpatient care

facilities where around

32% of the participants work.









A majority of the participants

states to feel appreciated

by the patients. Only 6%

do not feel appreciated.








However, only 1/4 of all

participants feels appreciated

by the employer. 









Similarly only 1/4 of all

participants feel

appreciated by the society










Only 4% of all participants

are fully satisfied with the

working conditions. Almost

one half is dissatisfied.










With around 89%

the majority of the

participants is at least

partially satisfied with

the own working quality.







Although the majority

of the participants is

dissatisfied with the working

conditions, over 70% of them

enjoy the work in itself.








Around 39% of the

participants think that

the major part of the

medical staff is not

sufficiently qualified.









Around 39% of the participants

state that almost one half

of all their activities comprise

tasks not related to care.








The majority of the

participants claims

that during the early

shift on average one

nurse is responsible

for eight patients.










Around one half of the participants

states that there exist almost

no team events.









Similarly, other teambuilding

activities are almost not

existent as well.








However, around 42% of

all participants state to have

a strong cohesion

in the team.











Over one half of the

participants is satisfied

with the team. Only 14%

are not satisfied.








However, 1/3 of the

participants claims that

the supervisor is not

interested in feedback.








45% of the participants

state that preferences with

regards to certain shifts are

taken into consideration.

However, around 20%

state the opposite.






Around 45% of the

participants get the

roster sufficiently

in advance.









Around 37% of the

participants are not

able to plan their vacation

as they wish. The major part

is able to plan it partially.






In case of sick leaves,

from around 71% of

the participants it is

expected to work

spontaneusly.










From one half of the

participants it is expected

to work overtime.







In emergency situations

around 41% of the participants

claims to work together with

leasing companies.

Around 29% of the participants

claim the opposite.







Over 70% of the

participants state that

the employer does not

attach enough importance

to work safety. 







However, protective equipment

is provided sufficiently in

most cases. Only 8% of the

participants claimed the opposite.









Around one half of

the participants is

satisfied with the

cleanliness in the ward.








Around 38% of the

participants are not satisfied

with the qualification of

the cleaning staff.








In case of an emergency

around 28% of the participants

claim to not meet the

hygiene requirements. 








For over one half of

the participants fresh

laundry is always available.











Over 86% of all participants

always have access to

sufficient desinfectants.
