Job Overview
The lithotripsy unit (situated in gate 36) is a multi-disciplinary service involved in the therapeutic care of patients with renal tract stones and the provision of Stone Clinics.
We are looking for a Lithotripsy Trainee Radiographer.
There will be progression to Band 7, subject to competency, training, and completion of post-graduate ultrasound training (which starts in January 2026).

Main Duties of the Job
You will be required to commence an ultrasound training course starting in January 2026 at UWE. Alongside this, you will be expected to gain clinical experience within the ultrasound and lithotripsy department.
Once fully trained (approximately 12 months), you will act as an extended scope practitioner in lithotripsy. You will be expected to independently perform and report renal ultrasound in lithotripsy and outpatient clinics and perform lithotripsy treatments.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
To help provide high quality and timely lithotripsy treatments:

  • Perform complex examinations relevant to appropriate level of training and experience.
  • Work within the lithotripsy team following protocols and guidance.

On Completion of Training

  • Confidence and ability to analyse relevant clinical information including other test results and use judgement where there is a range of options, to perform and/or adapt techniques required to undertake a satisfactory treatment, examination, and diagnosis.
  • Ability to exercise judgement when dealing with patient enquiries, analyse and resolve patient problems.
  • Provide advice on future patient management where appropriate.
  • Apply clinical knowledge in the manipulation of complex image data using dedicated software. Advanced physical skills required to perform treatments and ultrasound examinations including excellent hand-eye coordination. Essential sensory skills would be sight, hearing, and touch, need for dexterity, manipulation, accuracy, and keyboard skills.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Must be HCPC registered.
  • Must hold the Diploma of the Society of Radiographers DCR(R) or BSc Radiography or equivalent.

Desirable Criteria

  • Minimum 2 years post qualification.
