Job Description

Do you want the privilege of visiting patients in their own homes to deliver increasingly complex, holistic care? If yes, District Nursing may be the right career choice for you with the added bonus of no night shifts.

We are able to offer part-time, full-time, and flexible working roles in a variety of District Nursing teams in Oxford City. There will be a team near you that would wholeheartedly welcome you to join them.

All levels of experience are welcome in District Nursing – Don’t believe the old wives tales about needing to work on a ward first. Whether you are newly qualified or looking for a change in direction and a more challenging role, we would welcome your application for this exciting opportunity to join the district nursing world.

As a Community Nurse, you would be supported to develop into an autonomous practitioner; nursing patients with multiple complex health care needs in their own home. District nursing is a highly specialised area of practice recognised by the Queens Nurses Institute and NMC as a specialist role.

As a Community Staff Nurse, you will work within a neighbourhood team of District Nurse Team Leaders, Community Staff Nurses, Therapists, Registered Nursing Associates, Health Care Assistants, and phlebotomists to meet the needs of the complex patient in the community and avoid admissions to the acute sector as far as practicable. This includes:

  • Intravenous medication administration
  • End of life care
  • Managing the deteriorating patient
  • Complex and simple wound care including VAC therapy and compression therapy
  • Venepuncture
  • Utilising advanced physical assessment skills and many more clinical nursing skills.

We nurse people with a variety of conditions in a holistic manner both in their own home and in clinic settings and work in close partnership with other primary health care professionals such as GP’s, Community Matrons, Community Therapies, and other Tier 2 specialised services such as Tissue Viability, Diabetes, and Heart Failure.

Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust provides physical, mental health and social care for people of all ages across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Swindon, Wiltshire, Bath and North East Somerset. Our services are delivered at community bases, hospitals, clinics, and people’s homes, delivering care as close to home as possible.

Our vision is that no matter who you are or where you are, you will tell us that you receive: "Outstanding care delivered by an outstanding team."

Our values are: "Caring, safe and excellent."

At Oxford Health, we offer a wide range of benefits designed to support your career and wellbeing. These include:

  • Excellent opportunities for career progression
  • Access to tailored individual and Trust-wide learning and development
  • 27 days annual leave, plus bank holidays, rising to 33 days with continuous service
  • NHS Discount across a wide range of shops, restaurants, and retailers
  • Competitive pension scheme
  • Lease car scheme
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Mental Health First Aiders
  • Staff accommodation (please note waiting lists may apply)
  • Staff networking and support groups hosted by our Equality, Diversity & Inclusion team.

What will we give you?

Once you have started with Oxford Health, you will be on the road to develop and hone your clinical skills. We offer each person a bespoke induction in your team with a period of being supernumerary. We will ensure you can attend the District Nursing Induction programme, which is tailored to district nursing staff, encompassing all facets of Oxford Health and the lived experience of what you will do, giving you an insight into the organisation. The preceptorship programme is another opportunity for you and you will be able to undertake a service development project. We at Oxford Health pride ourselves in supporting and developing our staff to achieve their potential and to fly in their career.

We hope that the advert has given you a clear understanding of the skills we are seeking and the opportunity at hand. You will need to use the “supporting statement” element of your application form to demonstrate your suitability for this role, and you should refer to the job description, person specification, and the guidance notes attached to this role to help you tailor your application.

The essential and desirable criteria will be used to shortlist for interview and you should ensure that you refer to these within your application to increase your chances of being selected for interview. We are aware that some candidates may choose to use AI tools to support their application. We kindly remind applicants that submissions should remain an honest and accurate representation of their experience and must take care to ensure the use of AI tools does not generate an application that does not accurately reflect their knowledge, skills, and values.
