Job Introduction
Our Band 6 Speech & Language Therapists are part of the Paediatric Therapy team and will autonomously manage a complex caseload of children with a range of varied and complex needs. This will involve specialist assessment and treatment of children with complex needs.

Our Band 6 Speech & Language Therapists will devise child-centred therapy plans using evidence-based practice to ensure that the individual’s full potential is developed or maintained.

As a Band 6 Speech & Language Therapist, you will provide clinical support, training, and supervision for junior staff and students.

Base
The post holder will be based at a site within their local quadrant of Surrey. This could be an admin base or a clinical base. Admin bases are located in Woking, Guildford, Chertsey, Epsom, and Redhill.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist support and advice to children, families, and carers regarding therapy needs, adapting communication to their level of understanding.
  • Share and receive complex or sensitive information with empathy and professionalism.
  • Attend and arrange multidisciplinary meetings to offer specialist input and contribute to care planning and diagnosis.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise a team of therapists and assistants, including appraisals and line management of Band 3–5 staff.
  • Deliver and oversee therapy programmes, ensuring accessibility through verbal, written, or pictorial formats.
  • Conduct and interpret complex assessments, establish therapy goals, and develop evidence-based intervention plans for home and educational settings.
  • Reassess and adapt therapy plans to meet evolving needs, ensuring best practice through sound clinical reasoning.
  • Maintain accurate electronic and written records in line with professional and organisational standards.
  • Produce detailed therapy reports and contribute to inter-agency communication and tribunal processes.
  • Make referrals to other professionals and agencies to address holistic child needs.
  • Deliver training and presentations for parents, carers, and educational staff; contribute to service development and audit activities.
  • Manage and prioritise a varied caseload, responding to urgent referrals when required.
  • Engage in research, audit, and development projects to enhance service quality.
  • Reflect on and develop professional practice through supervision and ongoing CPD in line with HCPC and professional body standards.
  • Deputise for senior staff (Band 7) as needed, supporting delivery of the therapy development plan.

The Ideal Candidate
Essential

  • B.Sc Hons or recognised degree equivalent qualification in Speech & Language Therapy; Health Care Professions Council registrar.
  • Knowledge of legislation and government policies related to the specialty.
  • 2 years post-graduate experience in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Broad knowledge of current best practice.
  • Previous SLT placement experience in the relevant clinical areas related to the post.
  • Documented evidence of CPD.
  • Competent to use standardised SLT assessments.
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to deliver training.
  • Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance in relation to current best practice and develop skills accordingly.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of working with children in the field of Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses relating to the post.
  • Membership of relevant Special Interest Groups/Clinical excellence networks.
  • Training relating to the line management and supervision of assistants and other therapists.
  • Experience of training parents, other therapists, and other professionals.

Other requirements: The successful applicant will need to be a car driver.
