Job Description

Job Title: MRI Radiographer
The post holder will work in a team primarily within MRI, responsible for their own practice within Radiology Directorate protocols and procedures in line with trust and national policies. In addition to that, they are expected to train and supervise junior members of staff, students, and other trainees visiting the department and will be the authorised person in the MRI department in line with MHRA guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete clinical competency and inductions.
  • Participate in the annual appraisal process with a personal development plan.
  • Once competency is completed and signed, work without direct supervision or support in out-of-hours service.
  • Required to work on a mobile scanner as necessary to support the service.

The post holder is required to perform a range of MRI procedures, including complex clinical cases, managing patient priority as appropriate. They will contribute to effective and responsive delivery of MRI services to patients and carry out a wide range of complex duties, acting on their own initiative, and using a wide range of professional, analytical, and reasoning skills when judging a variety of complex clinical issues.

  • Assist in and manage workflow and ensure all data inputs are recorded for both patient record integrity and statistical evaluation purposes.
  • Promote the highest professional and technical standards in the department using personal examples.

Professional Development:

  • Demonstrate partnership in professional development issues, maintaining a high level of technical and theoretical skills through personal CPD.
  • Participate in the Governance of the Department in areas including Risk Management, Health and Safety, Research, and Audit activities.
  • Assist Senior Radiographic colleagues, Superintendent Radiographers, and Principal Radiographers in the organisation and function of day-to-day management in the radiological sciences.

Safety and Quality Assurance:

  • Take responsibility for MRI safety screening and ensure all patients are safety checked and suitable for MRI scans.
  • Supervise and support junior staff and promote maintenance of an efficient, effective, and high-quality service for all users.
  • Manage and report any equipment/power failures as appropriate.
  • Actively promote and participate in clinical audits.

Clinical Duties:

  • Undertake all MRI examinations as directed to an acceptable standard and seek guidance as appropriate.
  • Aim to achieve and promote quality in all aspects of the Radiology service, incorporating clinical tutorials.
  • Ensure the safety of self, staff, and service users regarding the use of ionising radiations in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act and Local Rules of the Radiological Safety Committee.
  • Produce high-quality images that are accurately labelled and appropriate for the indicated pathology.

Training and Collaboration:

  • Ensure completion of all mandatory training and competency to use the required equipment.
  • Participate in the appraisal process and Directorate Role Development programmes, e.g., IV training.
  • Liaise with other staff groups and departments within the Trust as required.
  • Attend statutory training days and fulfil CPD commitments.
  • Develop expertise and practical competence within MRI, which may involve postgraduate study.
  • Care for patients' needs, attend to their welfare, and ensure that you encourage and practice 'first time right' Radiography.

Communication:

  • Effectively communicate information and instructions to patients and their relatives to undertake radiographic examinations.
  • Particularly where there are significant barriers to understanding, such as cognitive impairment, illness, hearing or sight impairment, and those who are anxious or in pain.
  • Ensure safety of self, staff, and patients/visitors regarding the use of MRI scanning equipment and adhering to MHRA and local Operational guidelines.

Operational Efficiency:

  • Report any operational problems, deal with room breakdowns and accidents, completing all relevant paperwork.
  • Adhere to and apply all relevant Health and Safety legislation and guidance.
  • Maintain strictest confidence when dealing with patients, staff, and other Health Service business information following Trust Policy and Data Protection Legislation.
  • Use and instruct others on the required functions of the computerised Radiology Patient Administration System and Radiology Information System, i.e., PACS and RIS.

Education and Training:

  • Actively participate in the education and training of all staff, including the Directorate Preceptor Programme for newly qualified staff.
  • Ensure compliance with the Trust's risk management policies and procedures, recognizing the aim to protect patients, staff, and visitors from harm, stressing that all staff have a responsibility to minimize risk.
  • Train and supervise the clinical work/assessment of student radiographers/assistant practitioners.
