Job Description

You will need to work at the forefront of the latest guidance and case law and will work as a medical advisor to housing and homelessness applications. You will need to be able to prioritise applicants on the Council’s housing register and award medical priority according to our housing allocations policy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide professional, consistent medical advice to help the Council prioritise applicants’ requests for priority on our housing register, awarding medical priority.
  • Conduct precise assessments of housing needs.
  • Provide disability and accessible housing advice.
  • Offer written advice to facilitate client feedback.
  • Provide prompt, professional advice to assist when medical issues are involved in part VII homeless-vulnerability cases.

Candidate Profile:
Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years work experience in a local authority housing setting or a medical assessment role.
  • Educated to a good standard with excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to be part of a productive working environment where staff are clear about expectations and committed to the vision, goals, and expectations of the organisation and service.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Housing Act 1996 Part V1, Localism Act 2011, and relevant legislation, good practice, case law as relevant to the portfolio.
  • Knowledge of current legislation: statutes, codes of guidance, case law for England or Wales.
  • Knowledge of medical and social welfare aspects of housing relating to:
    • Framework for the medical assessment of housing applications.
    • Medical priority in Allocations.
    • Best practice relating to assessing vulnerability including priority need including Johnson/Hotak.
    • 20 Common medical problems in a housing context including: Depression & mental illness, personality disorders, Asthma, HIV, autism & ADHD, drug abuse, alcoholism, harassment and noise, self-harm.
    • Use of stairs & lifts, heating, extra bedrooms for carers, refusal of offers.
