Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician Rheumatology and Orthopaedics

We are seeking a proactive Pharmacy Technician to join our team, supporting ward-based clinical pharmacy services for patients in the Trauma, Orthopaedics and Rheumatology directorate. In this role, you will collaborate with skilled Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacists, and Pharmacy Assistants to optimise medicines for rheumatology and orthopaedic patients at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. You will:

• Assist the rheumatology team with homecare supply and medicines management on the day unit.
• Undertake medicines reconciliation.
• Support ward-based dispensing.
• Promote safe and effective medication use at ward level.

A solid grasp of medicines management and a flexible approach are essential. This post suits registered Pharmacy Technicians accredited in medicines management who wish to develop their clinical skills, or newly qualified Pharmacy Technicians looking to begin their ward-based career. Applicants must:

• Hold NVQ level 3 (QCF) or equivalent.
• Be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
• Be accredited in medicines management or accuracy checking.

Key Responsibilities:

• Support the rheumatology team in processing homecare prescriptions for high-cost medications.
• Undertake medicines reconciliation for patients admitted to units within the Trauma, Orthopaedics and Rheumatology (TOR) directorate.
• Improve the quality of clinical care to patients in the TOR directorate by means of an efficient medicines management system. This includes the use of patient’s own drugs (PODs), facilitating efficient supply of medications (including original pack dispensing), near-patient discharge systems, and counselling patients about their medicines.
• Provide a clinical pharmacy service that ensures the safe and cost-effective use of medications, including reviewing ward stock lists.
• Participate in the education and training of other members of the pharmacy and multidisciplinary teams.
• Participate in audits as per Trust requirements, for example, Safe & Secure Storage of Medicines and Controlled Drug audits.
• Be an active member of the Pharmacy department and TOR Pharmacy Team, ensuring continuous two-way exchange of information to maintain high standards within the Trust.
