Job Description

University Hospitals of North Midlands is currently unable to provide sponsorship for this role. Role Overview
The post holder will be required to perform a range of routine and non-routine healthcare science tasks within Pathology, following Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) including the Pathology Quality Policy to provide technical support to Biomedical Scientists (BMS) in order to ensure a high-quality service in all areas of the relevant Pathology discipline. The tasks will include:

  • Sample preparation
  • Operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Updating of information systems

Responsibilities

  • Work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Department, especially in relation to Health and Safety and Quality.
  • Assist with the monitoring of quality standards within the department.
  • Supervise and allocate work to Pathology Support Workers and Medical Laboratory Assistants.
  • Be an efficient and flexible member of the laboratory team assisting in the delivery of the service.
  • Provide clinical technical services and undertake routine and non-routine tests.
  • Undertake analysis of samples according to departmental SOPs using complex equipment.
  • Resolve problems with sample quality or where additional information to perform the test is required.
  • Read and report results of simple non-interpretive manual investigations.
  • Record generated test results prior to validation by BMS.
  • Report referred work prior to validation by BMS.
  • Perform External Quality Assessment for reporting by BMS.
  • Undertake planned preventative maintenance on highly complex/specialised equipment.
  • Perform calibrations and validate quality control within acceptable ranges. Refer to BMS for out of range quality control.
  • Sort and prepare samples for referral to other laboratories according to departmental SOPs and current postal regulations.
  • Generate and monitor outstanding internal and referred work lists.
  • Comply with local and national policies for the safe, secure, confidential processing and storage of patient and other laboratory information. Report any witnessed deficiency in health and safety and quality systems to the line manager or the department lead.
  • Dispose of specimens, documentation, and general waste appropriately according to confidentiality, health & safety requirements, and departmental SOP.

Position Details
A post for a permanent, full-time, Associate Practitioner (AP) is available in the Haematology Department based at Macclesfield Hospital. Participation in any form of extended working day may be required in the future.

The AP's role is to support Biomedical Scientists within the Haematology & Blood Transfusion Department. The successful applicant will be enthusiastic, well-motivated, possess excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, and be committed to the provision of a high-quality laboratory service. Data inputting skills and attention to detail are essential for this role. Full training will be given for this post.

The Haematology Laboratory is equipped with:

  • Three Beckman Coulter DxH 900 analysers
  • Two Werfen ACL TOP 350 coagulation analysers
  • Starrsed Auto Compact ESR analyser
    Blood Transfusion is equipped with Bio-Rad IH-1000/IH-500 blood grouping analysers. The LIMS system is Clinisys Winpath Enterprise.
