Job Overview
We are looking for a compassionate and skilled Clinical Psychologist to join our award-winning Trust-wide Staff Wellbeing Service at North Bristol NHS Trust.
Please note this post will start in May 2026.
The service provides bespoke support and consultation to teams, workshops on a range of themes (e.g., psychological safety, coping with challenging circumstances, peer-to-peer PITSTOPs/hot debriefing, and trauma awareness), facilitated supervision groups, consultation for managers and leaders, and specialist 1:1 psychological support for work-based issues (including trauma-focused work) as well as signposting to counselling services (e.g., through the external Employee Assistance Programme). The service has been integral to supporting staff during the COVID pandemic and as part of the next phase, working closely with colleagues across the trust, including those in Staff Experience, Leadership, Management & Development, HR, and Mental Health Liaison.

Main Duties of the Job
The Staff Wellbeing Psychology Team provides a range of responsive as well as pro-active support to staff. The service has a particular ethos in supporting relational and team wellbeing, recognizing that wellbeing and resilience are often more helpfully seen as being fostered by connections between us, not just within us. The service values innovation, co-developing interventions in response to challenges and needs of our colleagues working in different contexts.

The post holder’s role will be to support staff across our organization and harness a culture of compassion, psychological safety, and care for all colleagues, teams, and patients within our Trust. This will include providing specialist psychological interventions at preventative, responsive, and specialist levels, including on a 1:1, team/group, and organizational level.

Working for Our Organisation
North Bristol NHS Trust employs over 12,000 staff providing healthcare to the residents of Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and North Somerset from our award-winning hospital building at Southmead. We are the regional Major Trauma Centre and an internationally recognized center of excellence in a range of services and major specialties. Our vision is that by enabling our teams to be the best that they can be, we will provide exceptional healthcare, personally delivered.

North Bristol NHS Trust values all people as individuals. We aim to be an anti-discriminatory organization and are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. We welcome applicants from all underrepresented groups.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

  • To provide compassionate, specialist interventions on an individual and team basis to enhance the culture of care for staff at North Bristol NHS Trust. This may include workshops, training, reflective groups, 1:1 sessions, and other direct and indirect interventions as agreed with the Staff Psychology Team.
  • To develop and deliver bespoke team interventions (e.g., aimed at enhancing psychological safety and compassion in teams) and supporting trauma-informed care for staff with work-based trauma or at risk of this.
  • To routinely evaluate clinical work using quantitative and qualitative measures and to be able to present this as needed to demonstrate the impact of the interventions; to share learnings and good practices within and outside of the Trust, e.g., for quarterly activity reports, at meetings, and conferences.
  • To attend and actively participate in professional meetings, supervision, and training, and to keep the Staff Psychology lead and team updated with key issues, updates, developments, and risks relating to the psychological health of staff and the organization.
  • To develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders within Staff Experience, HR, People & Transformation, Occupational Health, as well as relevant external organizations, where the post holder is expected to understand and maintain agreed terms of co-working and balance of responsibilities.
  • Participate in the advancement of the North Bristol NHS Trust strategy for staff wellbeing, including research and service development.
  • As needed and appropriate, and dependent on experience, offer specialist supervision and teaching to assistant psychologists or Trainee Clinical Psychologists on placement from the local Doctoral Training Courses.
  • Participate in appraisals with the service lead at set intervals as part of professional development.
  • To contribute to a supportive, psychologically safe, and open climate within the Staff Psychology team, and to be committed to self-care and team care as a core part of the role.

We are committed to ensuring that colleagues within the Staff Psychology team feel valued and supported as part of the work we do supporting others. The post holder and their line manager will ensure an appropriate level of clinical supervision as well as ad hoc support as needed, and in accordance with professional practice guidelines. They will together agree on a job plan and undertake appraisals for personal development on an annual basis, or more frequently as required or helpful.

These duties and responsibilities will be regularly reviewed with the postholder, and changes may be collaboratively agreed over time. For those applying to be considered for a preceptorship post, the transition from band 7 to 8a will be agreed with the service lead according to progression with the 8a competencies outlined in this document, with a minimum of 1 year's post-qualification experience for progression.
