Main duties of the job
We are looking for a Nurse to join our Endoscopy pre-assessment team on a fixed term basis to cover maternity leave. The primary function of the role is to deliver high quality, safe, effective, and compassionate healthcare to patients undergoing elective endoscopic procedures.

The main purpose of the role is pre-assessment of patients attending the Endoscopy unit for elective procedures including diagnostic, therapeutic and surveillance pathways. The successful applicant will ensure patients are provided with information and support surrounding any planned procedures within the endoscopy department, to ensure patients are adequately prepared for any planned appointments in a safe and timely manner. The pre-assessment role supports efficient use of clinical capacity within the endoscopy department and is an important role in enabling the department to see patients' referrals in a timely manner without delay.

The post holder will work as part of the Pre-Assessment Team and in close collaboration with the Therapeutic Endoscopy Team.

The role holder will report directly to the Nurse Endoscopist, with professional support and oversight from senior nursing and medical staff within the Endoscopy Department.

Close working relationships will also be maintained with administrative staff and other team members involved in patient care.

Responsibilities
Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Work independently as part of the Pre assessment team under the supervision of the Nurse Endoscopist or designated medical colleague to deliver safe, high-quality pre-assessment care.
  • Undertake comprehensive patient assessments and examinations to formulate appropriate management plans for patients referred to the Endoscopy Department for diagnostic, therapeutic, and surveillance procedures.
  • Complete all necessary pre-procedural preparations to ensure patients are ready for Endoscopic interventions.
  • Obtain and document informed consent in line with Trust policies and professional standards.
  • Identify, request, and interpret any additional investigations required to support safe patient management.
  • Recognise and escalate potential complications or clinical concerns to the Nurse Endoscopist or relevant medical colleague.

Experience And Skills
Demonstrable experience in assessing and caring for patients within an Endoscopy or related acute care setting, including those requiring diagnostic, therapeutic, and surveillance procedures.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary team members.
  • Strong organisational and clinical decision-making skills, working effectively within professional and departmental guidelines to ensure safe, high-quality care.
  • Ability to work independently while recognising when to escalate concerns or seek support from senior colleagues.
  • The post holder must demonstrate flexibility to work within the Endoscopy Department, liaising effectively with other team members to ensure a safe and efficient service.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience
Essential criteria:

  • Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
  • Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
  • History taking and Physical Assessment experience/course and competencies
  • Significant post registration experience
  • Evidence of supporting learners in practice
  • Evidence of ongoing personal and professional development

Desirable criteria:

  • Independent non-medical prescribing qualification
  • Management experience/course
  • Advanced health assessment and diagnosis course
  • Broad range of post registration experience including within an Endoscopy Unit
  • Evidence of clinical leadership and managerial ability
