Post Title: Cardiology SpR
Location: Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust
The post will be based at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, where the successful candidate will join the existing cardiology SpRs in sharing duties of:
This is a 1 in 10 shift for nights with two SpRs on each night. In addition, there are 1 in 20 shifts for long-days on take Mon-Thurs, Fri-Sun, twilight shifts, and ward cover day shifts Sat-Sun. We have provided a much safer level of overnight cover at middle grade by increasing the number of our SpRs from 11 to 20. All the other Acute Medical duties are therefore 1 in 20, so our SpRs spend a much greater proportion of their time in their chosen specialty.
Please note, this post is not available through the MTI programme. The post-holder will work alongside the team of Consultants, SpRs, junior medical staff, and specialist nurses to optimise the running of Dryden Ward and Northampton Heart Centre. The 5 SpRs organise their own rota for ward cover, referrals, and OPD, taking into account GIM commitments and leave. This is overseen by our Interventional Fellow ST6.
The post-holder will work across all aspects of the service but will mainly be based on the cardiology ward and in the Heart Centre, caring for patients with predominantly cardiology conditions. There will be close supervision by the consultants. The key aim will be to develop a broad-based knowledge in cardiology as well as practical procedural skills such as ECHO, Pacing, Angio, etc. As for our Higher Specialist Registrars, the contribution to the Acute Medical Take is an important and essential part of Cardiology training. Only candidates with the necessary qualification and experience to work as the Medical SpR on call will be interviewed.
The successful candidate will be allocated an educational and clinical supervisor and encouraged to complete training assessments in line with other trainees at the same level. There will be opportunities to attend specialist clinics (Heart Failure, GUCH, EP). The training programme is based on the JRCPTB core curriculum for Cardiology but will be specifically tailored for each trainee to complement their specialist training to date and ensure the programme meets the educational needs of the appointee. We wish to appoint a candidate who has a good background in general medicine and who is interested in developing an interest in all aspects of cardiology, and would expect them to be appointed to Higher Specialist Training in Cardiology in due course.
We have twice weekly MDTs on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, the latter attended virtually by a Cardiac Surgical team from Coventry and Oxford. We have an active PCI service providing ACS and elective PCI, rotablation, IVL, FFR, CTO IVUS, OCT, etc. We undertake all our own PPM, ICD (including SCICD), and CRT implantation and follow-up and were the first non-surgical centre in Europe to implant the leadless MICRA PPM. We have DSE, TOE, contrast ECHO, CT angiography, Nuclear Cardiology, and access to CMR at our sister hospital KGH.
There are specialist clinics in Valve disease, EP, GUCH, etc.
