Job Description

Job Summary:
Gastroenterologist duties include consulting and diagnosing patients, inspecting internal organs through endoscopic procedures, and consulting with patients' primary physicians. This role also involves management of other gastrointestinal issues such as obesity, liver disease, gallbladder disease, and certain types of cancer.

Supervisory Responsibility:
This position has the responsibility to oversee Advance Practitioner Providers from a clinical standpoint, as well as other medical staff, such as medical assistants, CRNAs, LPNs, and RNs. Direct, day-to-day supervision is not required, only supervision relating to patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform physical exams and record findings.
  • Manage acute and long-term medical needs of patients.
  • Order appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
  • Administer medications and injections.
  • Interview and advise patients regarding health and illness prevention. Recommend community resources to meet patient and family needs.
  • Instruct patients and families regarding medications and treatment instructions. Provide patient education.
  • Maintain and review patient records, charts, and other pertinent information.
  • Triage patient telephone calls and provide consultation.
  • Provide monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits.
  • Consult with patients to understand their health concerns.
  • Consult with a patient's primary doctor.
  • Analyze patient historical data.
  • Consult with other specialists, such as oncologists, in the case of cancer.
  • Diagnose and treat GI disorders.
  • Provide advice on diet and nutrition to patients and refer them to registered dietitians as needed.
  • Perform endoscopic procedures, such as ERCPs, colonoscopies, sigmoidoscopies, upper endoscopies, duodenoscopies, gastroscopies, and barium swallows.
  • Conduct research to advance knowledge about gastrointestinal diseases and treatments.
  • Prescribe medications to treat digestive disorders and perform surgery to remove polyps or other abnormalities in the colon or rectum.
  • Participate in clinical continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Interpret and integrate data to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as needed.
  • Perform diagnostic tests, such as blood tests and stool tests, to determine the cause of a patient’s symptoms.
  • Refer patients to specialists if further diagnostic testing or treatment is needed.
  • Provide coordination of medical care to patients with chronic diseases, such as diabetes or hypertension, to manage symptoms and prevent complications.
  • For all One GI locations that have relationships with local hospitals, participation in “on call” rotation is required.

Education And Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Medical degree required.
  • Completion of relevant residency programs, including a general residency program first, studying topics such as endoscopy, radiology, and pathology. After this, complete a residency program in gastroenterology.
  • Completion of a three (3) year gastroenterology fellowship.
  • Attainment of certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine.
  • Attainment of license from the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).
  • Attainment of a state medical license obtained through the applicable state’s medical board.
  • Proficiency in performing endoscopic and colonoscopy procedures.
  • Proficiency with X-Rays, MRIs, and ultrasound scanning.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Strong and up-to-date medical knowledge, including the latest medical research and discoveries in the field, effective treatment methods for patients’ conditions, and understanding of the latest advancements in medical technology.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining medical procedures and treatment options to patients, collaborating with other medical professionals on patient care, and effectively using written communication for medical records and documents.
  • Strong technical skills to diagnose and treat patients, interpret medical test results, scan patients’ bodies, read medical charts, and develop treatment plans for patients and explain treatment options to patients and their families.
  • Strong analytical skills to make diagnoses, develop treatment plans, and research/study medical literature to stay updated on the latest treatment options.
  • Ability to use empathy to understand and share the feelings of others, helping patients feel comfortable during procedures and treatment.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification required.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and hear. Understand/comprehend English as well as read/follow written English instructions.
This role requires continuous activity levels in areas such as walking, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, and reaching. It also requires dexterity in motion/flexibility. Ability to lift, push, or pull 35+ pounds or more. Must be able to differentiate colors and successfully pass color blind screening.

Work Environment:
This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stoop as necessary. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies up to 20 pounds. This job operates in a professional office environment, routinely using standard office equipment.
This job operates in a clinic and procedure room environment, with potential exposure to blood, tissue, and bodily fluids. Involves exposure to Glutaraldehyde/Rapicide (Refer to SDS manual as needed) and occasional exposure to communicable diseases and biohazards.
