Job Title: Phlebotomist
We are looking to recruit a new Phlebotomist to join our existing team to work primarily in the Community/Domiciliary/Care Home settings across the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Borough, plus holiday/sickness cover within hospital and outpatient sites.

Key Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills are essential, together with an empathetic nature.
  • A flexible approach, enthusiasm, and proven team player skills are required, along with the ability to use one's own initiative.
  • Phlebotomy experience would be beneficial but not essential as full training will be given.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To work as part of the Phlebotomy Team collecting/labelling of venous and capillary samples from ward patients, Outpatient Clinic, and within Community, Domiciliary and Care Home settings.
  • To ensure Pathology is provided with a perfect blood sample with every venepuncture.
  • The post holder may be required to work in other departments across the organisation including across sites.

Planning and Organisational Duties:

  • Collect blood samples from adults by venepuncture on Trust and Non-Trust premises in both in-patient and out-patient settings, including Domiciliary premises and Care Homes.
  • Perform paediatric blood collection on children 12 years and over on all Trust sites.
  • Adapt blood taking technique based on the individual needs of the patient, considering medical conditions, needle phobias, and learning difficulties.
  • Prioritise urgent blood requests and recognise special blood tests requiring specific testing times.
  • Maintain adequate stock levels of the blood collection system and ensure minimal wastage.
  • Ensure compliance with Infection Control Policies, following strict hygiene in all areas.
  • Assist in practical training of new staff and support the Phlebotomy Manager in collating weekly statistics and performing audits.

Communications and Key Working Relationships:

  • Communicate effectively with laboratory staff, clinical staff, patients, relatives, and carers regarding test requests.
  • Promote and maintain good working relationships with all staff.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times and greet patients in a polite and positive manner.

Responsibility for Finance:

  • Inform the Senior Phlebotomist of any shortages of supplies.
  • Use departmental resources in a cost-effective manner.

Responsibility for Human Resources:

  • Display empathy and a pleasant manner to all patients and colleagues.
  • Assist in the induction of new phlebotomy staff and comply with mandatory training requirements.

Responsibility for Health & Safety:

  • Perform venepuncture following correct procedures and safely handle biological samples.
  • Ensure a safe environment is maintained for both staff and patients.
  • Comply with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, actively managing risk in all actions.

Responsibility for Teaching:

  • Support and assist in the training of new staff entering the service, including those within hospital and community settings.
