Set in a beautiful heritage building, DOCTORnow is a long established Private General Practice in Old Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. Due to expansion, we have an exciting opportunity for a Practice Nurse to join our growing team. This part-time position is for a Friday only, hours of 08:30 - 17:00.

Job Purpose
The purpose of the post is to deliver safe, high-quality nursing services to the practice population. Working within the NMC Code of Conduct, the post holder will be part of the nurse team, using previous primary care experience to provide advanced nurse interventions and influence the development of nursing services. The post holder will be responsible for delivering safe and effective nursing care to the practice population, undertaking a variety of duties as necessary.

Practice Nurse Duties

  • Prioritise, organise, and manage own workload to maintain and promote a quality, patient-focused service.
  • Promote a learning environment with a no-blame culture. Carry out nursing interventions and measurements for patients using clinical judgment, providing high-quality patient-focused Nursing Services to both private and corporate clients.
  • Administer medications by injection with the appropriate legal authorisation.
  • Recognise health promotion opportunities and give brief, focused lifestyle advice using motivational interviewing techniques and undertake routine screening processes.
  • Undertake initial assessment of patients presenting with wounds, produce treatment plans, and refer to other services as necessary.
  • Measure circulation by recording Ankle Brachial Pressure Index and apply compression therapy to patients with venous leg ulcers.
  • Remove wound closure materials including sutures, clips, and staples.
  • Take samples for the cervical screening programme according to recognised standards.
  • Provide ear care including removal of cerumen and provide education and advice, including Microsuction.
  • Administer vaccines to adults and children according to the immunisation schedules.
  • Provide a pre-travel health service including administration of vaccines and advice after undertaking appropriate risk assessment.
  • Develop and follow referral pathways for patients with specialist needs.
  • Provide a nurse-run asthma/diabetes/COPD service to patients, including screening, diagnosis, ongoing management, and referral to other agencies in line with NICE guidance and Quality and Outcome Framework indicators.
  • Develop effective systems for ongoing supervision of all health care staff, including mentorship for preceptor programmes and contributing to revalidation needs of nurse colleagues.
  • Advise on the cost-effective purchase of assets, equipment, and other resources, including staff costs.
  • Check and maintain agreed stock levels of all vaccines, medication, and other clinical supplies. Ensure monthly stock checks are carried out in conjunction with the Finance Manager.
  • Complete statutory training/updating and mandatory training as defined by the practice.
  • Complete skills-specific training and regular updating.
  • Recognise and work within the professional code of conduct as regulated by the Nursing Council (NMC).
  • Participate in an annual individual performance review, maintaining a record of personal and professional development including the requirements of NMC revalidation.
  • Take responsibility for own development, learning, and performance. Identify gaps in knowledge and skills and how further learning can enhance the delivery of nursing service.
  • Follow appropriate infection control procedures.
  • Maintain work areas in a tidy and safe manner.
  • Act in a way that recognises people’s rights, interpreting them in a way that is consistent with practice procedures, policies, and current legislation.
  • Respect the privacy, dignity, needs, and beliefs of patients, carers, and colleagues.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Nursing qualification and NMC registration in place for at least 5 years and 2 years in a practice nurse role.
  • Knowledge and leadership skills to maintain compliance and awareness of process and policy related to the role.
  • Managerial approach to work characterised by commitment, motivation, and energy.
  • Confidence and proficiency in the use of IT systems, including Microsoft software (such as Word, Excel, and Outlook), to ensure accurate documentation, effective communication, and reliable reporting.
  • Reliable and flexible — able to adapt to the changing needs of the Practice.
  • Ability to work calmly and efficiently, even under pressure.
  • Ability to effectively deal with complaints and their resolution.

At least 2 years’ post-qualification experience as a practice nurse or equivalent preferred.

Schedule: Fridays, occasional Saturdays, holiday/sickness cover
