Job Description

An opportunity has arisen within palliative care haematology & general medicine for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Band 2 HCA to join our team and develop their HCA skills.

You will be supported by all members of the team, including HCA's, RGN's, the Deputy Ward Manager, and the Ward Manager.

Important Note: Band 2s will not be eligible for sponsorship as these roles will not meet the required skill level (RQF 3 or A level and above), despite having their salary increase.

Main Duties of a Band 2 HCA:

  • Assist the nursing staff of our care group.
  • Care for patients' activities of daily living, nutrition, hydration, and continence needs.
  • Promote activity and monitor pressure area care.
  • Document fluid balances and pressure area care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients in meeting their hygiene needs and carry out all aspects of personal care and grooming (to include emptying catheter bags).
  • Provision of patients' toileting needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.
  • Support patients in managing incontinence.
  • Measure patients' fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts and report information to the registered nurse.
  • Prepare for mealtimes by sitting patients correctly and ensuring they are provided with snacks during the night and throughout the day, assisting/feeding patients as necessary.
  • Carry out any moving and handling within the safe practice guidelines from mandatory training and in relation to the patients' manual handling plan.
  • Enable patients to maintain/improve their mobility by using exercise and mobility appliances as directed by individual care plans.
  • Assist in the prevention of pressure sore development as directed by the registered nurse in conjunction with patients' plans of care.
  • Obtain specimens from patients for ward or laboratory testing.
  • Assist nurses in Last Offices.
  • Initiate Basic Life Support techniques as appropriate and provide assistance to the registered nurse.
